Rotenfels & Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg

So cold…

On a really cold winter morning (-11 degrees Celsius) we took photos of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg up on the Rotenfels shortly after sunrise. The view and the atmosphere were something very special. Fun fact: We had very hot tea with us, but couldn’t drink it, because we had forgotten our cups…

Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg

Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg is a spa town of about 4,000 inhabitants (as of 2004) in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is recognized as a mineral spring spa and a climatic spa. Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg lies between 108 and 320 m above sea level at the foot of Castle Ebernburg in a region of low mountains with forests and vineyards framed by craggy massifs of the Rheingrafenstein and the Rotenfels and also by the river Nahe.

The legend of Ebernburg

According to legend, the Ebernburg castle got its name when it was fought for. The attackers besieged them and wanted to starve the castle residents. When supplies ran out and the penultimate pig was finally slaughtered, the lord of the castle came up with the following idea: every day he had the last remaining boar dragged into the yard and tortured so that it screamed as if it was being slaughtered. When the besiegers heard the noise of the alleged slaughter every day for two weeks, they assumed that the castle still had sufficient supplies. So they left again without having conquered the Ebernburg. Therefore, according to legend, the castle is called Ebernburg today.
