Summer in Allgäu and Zillertal

Summer Vaction

A few pictures from our summer vacation in the Allgäu and in the Zillertal, Tyrol, Austria. We’ve been in Obermaiselstein, near Fischen and in Mayrhofen, Zillertal, Austria.

Christlessee

In addition to many other hikes, we also did a tour to the Christlessee. The starting point of the rather short tour with a length of 12 km was Oberstdorf.

The Christlessee is located in the southeast of Oberstdorf near the hamlet of Gottenried in the Trettachtal at an altitude of 916 meters. At the bottom of the lake there are some karst springs that ensure that the crystal clear Christlessee with drinking water quality never freezes over in winter, as this spring water has a temperature of four to six degrees in summer and winter.

There is a path around the lake, from which you can take good photos of the lake from different angles.

Schlegeisspeicher, Zillertal, Austria

The Schlegeisspeicher is a high mountain reservoir in Tyrol, on the border with South Tyrol. It is located in the municipality of Finkenberg – a small town near Mayrhofen. It is probably the most famous reservoir in the whole of the Zillertal – if not in the Alps at all. The picture with the suspension bridge and a view of the glacier can be found on social media everywhere.

We also went the tour from the Schlegeisspeicher uphill in the direction of the Olperer Hut, but only walked 3/4 of the way. It was very funny to see how many young people (aka Instagrammer) were also on the road and certainly wanted to take a photo of the suspension bridge. We saved that for another time, but the view of the Schlegeis reservoir was phenomenal.

Ahorn & Penken, Zillertal, Austria

There are two local mountains, Ahorn and Penken, near Mayrhofen. Large cable cars lead up to both. Once at the top, you have wonderful views of the Zillertal and the neighboring mountain ranges.

The Ahornbahn, Austria’s largest aerial tramway, takes you from Mayrhofen in the Zillertal (Tyrol) to a plateau below the Ahornspitze (height 1966 meters). From there, hiking trails lead to the Ahornspitze or (easy) to the Filzenkogel. The Penkenbahn is a cable car in the Zillertal in Tyrol, which also starts in Mayrhofen and takes you to the mountain station at 1790 meters above sea level.

Unfortunately, both Mayrhofen and the two mountains are very touristically overcrowded.
